IPL-Permanent Hair Reduction  (Intense Pulsed Light)

IPL is an effective treatment designed to remove unwanted hairs using intense pulsed light to select and destroy hair follicles.  It is a safe and non-invasive method of preventing future hair growth.  IPL works by passing a handheld flashgun over the target area of skin which transmits a beam of light.  Melanin in the hair shaft attracts and absorbs the light which is then converted into heat which destroys the hair follicle and any stem cells responsible for the development of new hair growth.  The darker the hair the more effective the treatment.

Before your treatment

You will receive an initial face-to-face consultation with your practitioner who will take a detailed medical history and perform a patch test prior to any IPL treatment.  This to make sure that IPL is suitable for you.

To make the treatment more effective we ask that you

  • don’t pluck, wax or thread your hair for at least a month prior to your treatment.

  • avoid direct sunlight for at least 4 to 6 weeks prior to your treatment.

  • always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays.

  • Shave the hair 2 to 3 days prior to your treatment.

During your treatment

You will be asked to wear goggles to protect your eyes from the light and a cooling gel will be applied to your skin.  The IPL hand held device will be placed over the area to be treated and you may feel a heat sensation during your treatment.  After the procedure a soothing gel or cool pack maybe applied to the skin.

After your treatment

You may experience some swelling, redness and skin colour changes immediately after your treatment which will subside gradually over a few hours - a cool pack can help manage these symptoms.  Avoid sun exposure for the next few weeks and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Don’t expose your skin to any heat treatments or apply any perfumed products to the treated area for 24-48 hours after your treatment and book your next appointment for approximately 4 weeks later.

How often will I need to get it done?

The number of sessions required can vary depending on hair thickness and colour however on average a number of 6 sessions is recommended.  Each session time will vary depending on the size of area being treated – an average treatment session for a bikini line is approximately 15 minutes.
